Film Review: Inside Out (9 out of 10)

Surely Disney has got Pete Docter wrapped in cotton wool somewhere, ensuring his complete safety and ability to create yet more masterpieces.

He’s come up the original story or screenplay for Pixar successes such as Toy Story, Up, WALL-E, and Monsters. Inc.

And now he’s added what I reckon is the best of them all - Inside Out.

Plus he also directed this superb movie, although no doubt he’d be the first to mention fellow writer/director Ronaldo Del Carmen.

The plot for Inside Out is simple - a young girl, Riley, moves with her family from mid-West America to San Francisco, with all the upheaval that brings.

Her emotions, Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness do their best to help her through the changes.

The brilliance is that these emotions are all excellently portrayed and the thought that’s gone into where they reside and how they interact is to be admired.

The plot could have got bogged down in pseudo-psychology but far from it.

The audience I was in ranged from grandparents to very young children and we all loved the film.

While Riley’s parents are played by two well-known actors, Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan, the rest of the cast aren’t A-listers by any means.

However, all of them are superb.

Joy, the original emotion and ‘leader’ is played by Amy Poehler (better known for her role in the Parks and Recreation TV series).

But Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Bill Hader (Fear), Lewis Black (Anger) and Mindy Kaling (Disgust) all deserve praise.

There’s plenty of humour, sadness and a lot for both children and grown-ups to take from this movie.

The Pixar animation is extraordinary with an attention to detail that’s quite incredible.

And, as usual, there’s a delightful short film to start things off - Lava - that will get you in the mood for what’s to come.

So, as the rain pours on another British summer’s school holiday, treat the children and yourself to 94 minutes of escapism of the highest order.
