FOLK MUSIC: Mick Groves at The Willows, Arundel

FAMED folksinger and former Spinner Mick Groves plays a special Christmas show at The Willows Folk Club in Arundel on Wednesday, December 8.

Mick made a name for himself as a member of The Spinners for more than 30 years.

During that time, the group made countless TV and radio appearances, including hosting several shows for the BBC, as well as regularly selling out major concert venues across the country.

Willows spokesman Chris Davis said: “Despite their many television appearances, it is as a live act that the band are best remembered, always providing an entertaining, easily accessible sound set to the backdrop of the band’s inbred professionalism.

“Although the band amicably disbanded in 1988, public demand saw them play reunion tours for a further five years before finally calling it a day. Mick retired from playing music professionally for over a decade, but, spurred on by the huge demand that still exists for the music of the Spinners, a few years ago Mick made a triumphant return to the world of folk music and live performance.

“To accompany this return, Mick released a new CD produced by Phil Beer, one half of the Show of Hands.

“Off the back of this, Mick was able to generate a number of bookings, including two hugely-successful appearances at the Willows.

“For his latest gig at the club, Mick is bringing back a special Christmas tradition when he presents a special Christmas-themed set.

“The Spinners’ Christmas shows were something of an annual institution for lovers of good music and of the festive season, with many sell-out Christmas tours and shows for the BBC.

“A Christmas concert from The Spinners always featured a diverse array of songs and carols from the thoughtprovoking to the comic, and from the well-known to the more obscure, all with choruses designed to get an audience singing along from the start, and Mick’s solo Christmas performance promises more of the same, with a special night to remember for years to come!”

Entrance for Mick’s gig on Wednesday, is £4.

The Willows Folk Club meets every Wednesday at 8pm in the function room of Arundel Football Club, Mill Road, Arundel.
