Francis Frith’s West Sussex photographs to go on show at libraries

Ten branches across the county will display nearly 200 photographs, dating back from the 1890s to 1930s, to tie-in with a new BBC series on the Victorian pioneer starting this week.

Mr Frith is best known for taking more than 365,000 pictures of almost every town and village in the UK – many of which were later turned into picture postcards.

Chichester, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Crawley libraries are the first branches in the county to feature the displays, with exhibitions running until, Saturday, March 31.

Photographs will then be on display at Worthing and Horsham from Monday, April 2, to Saturday, April 21, and Shoreham from Monday, April 2, to Friday, April 13.

County council deputy leader Lionel Barnard, who oversees the library service, said: “This is an excellent opportunity to see West Sussex’s past from the lens of one of the world’s greatest photographers.”

A3 re-productions of the photograph will be on sale at the libraries.
