INSTRUMENT DAYS: Make music at Howarth in Worthing

THE Worthing-based manufacturing workshops of Howarth of London will be alive with the sound of music at their annual instrument days.

The workshops are designed to give people the opportunity to see oboe-making in action, try a range of woodwind instruments and help to raise money for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice.

Howarth is the only major woodwind manufacturer in the UK and creates the instruments from workshops in Buckingham Road, Worthing.

The instrument days include a tour of the workshops showing how wood and sheets of metal are transformed into the finest instruments from the oboe family.

Jeremy Walsworth, the company’s director, said: “At Howarth, we are fortunate to be on hand to help children produce their first sounds on a musical instrument and we love seeing their reactions when they accomplish this.

“We know that the children at Chestnut Tree House do not necessarily have this privilege so we hope to raise a generous sum of money to help the hospice continue their excellent work.”

One of the event’s organisers, Laura King, added: “When you come to one of our events it doesn’t really matter if you are a complete beginner. There will be plenty of people in the showroom to help you make a sound and its great fun having a go.”
