The club has been set up by jazz pianist Nicolas Saunders who will be at the heart of the club’s house band which will back the club’s visiting performers.

First guest will be Julian Nicholas leading the band.

Nic said: “One of the leading members of the seminal band Loose Tubes, Julian is one of the most creative players on the scene and appears regularly at the major jazz venues and festivals. This is a great opportunity to catch him close up and personal to really experience the power and exquisite talent of one of this country’s leading musicians.”

Nic added: “As a jazz musician I am playing around the country with all sorts of people. There are a lot of big names and good names on the UK jazz scene, and this is happening because I want to bring some of them to Chichester. The club will be running every month, and we have got a whole programme booked up until June next year.

“We have got a Facebook page that has been getting lots of attention. I have been involved with jazz education at both the (Chichester) college and the university, and I wanted to do something that would give an opportunity to inspire the students.

“I was also looking for a venue. I have done a couple of gigs at La Havana (in Little London) before, and it has got a great feel. It is like a mini 606 Club, which I think is one of my favourite clubs in London to play.”

Nic said he would try to make sure his new club doesn’t clash with the existing Chichester Jazz Club: “I don’t know if we will run it in August, but if we get a good following, then maybe we will. I would like it to be something that very much makes a regular appearance on the Chichester calendar.”

The underground club will run on the second Friday of each month. Entry is £5 and £3 for students. Doors open at 8.30pm with music form 9-11pm. Each night will conclude with a jam tune where musicians are welcome to sit in. The jam tune will be published on Facebook beforehand each time. More details on www.facebook.com/lahavanajazz.

Coming up in the series before Christmas are Imogen Ryall (Friday, November 13) and Johnny Mars (Friday, December 11).
