REMEMBRANCE CONCERT: At Worthing Assembly Hall

THIS year, Worthing Symphony Orchestra will pay tribute to those who served at sea as part of their annual Remembrance Day weekend concert.

Taking place at the Assembly Hall, Worthing, on Sunday, November 14, it will feature a combination of haunting and hopeful classical work

Spokeswoman for the show, Gemma Nethersole, said: “The classic film theme for this concert will be The Cruel Sea, a fittingly stark portrayal of life and death in the Atlantic during World War Two in which the sea is portrayed as the ultimate villain with the music swelling and seeming to echo the movement and cooling of the sea.

“Sir Edward Elgar’s famous Nimrod variation, the ninth on his Enigma theme, will be played alongside the main theme from the film Schindler’s List by renowned composer John Williams.”

Worthing Symphony orchestra conductor John Gibbons said: “The atmosphere of contemplation and reflection, particularly appropriate on Remembrance Sunday, is enhanced by both Sir Edward Elgar and Hollywood legend John Williams whose music powerfully supports Spielberg’s epic film.”

The second half of the concert also features Elgar with soloist mezzo soprano Elizabeth Sikora performing his song cycle, Sea Pictures, which includes five songs filled with the different personalities of the sea and sea allusions.

Elizabeth Sikora is a regular performer with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. She has sung roles in La Traviata, Die Zauberflöte, Die Walküre, Jenufa, Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Eugene Onegin among others, under notable conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Sir Mark Elder and Sir Simon Rattle.

Closing the afternoon will be Sibelius’s Symphony No 2 in D Major.

It is built around a three-note motif which develops into an uplifting finale, symbolising freedom after great oppression before the concert concludes with Elgar’s Prelude and Angel’s Farewell.

Tickets for the show, which starts at 2.45pm, can be obtained by calling the box office on 01903 206206.
