REVIEW: The Proclaimers, Assembly Hall, Worthing

There was a great atmosphere at The Assembly Hall on Saturday night as The Proclaimers blasted out their unique style of folk rock.

Twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid were back in Worthing and the capacity crowd was clearly delighted to see them.

Folk singer Will Varley warmed the crowd up nicely with his friendly style and comic lyrics.

The volume then shot up as the brothers and their band arrived on stage and one after another of their popular tunes was performed.

Sky Takes the Soul was a great way to start, with Over and Done With and their first big hit, Letter From America, swiftly following.

They are not big talkers so it was pretty much music all the way, including songs from the film Sunshine on Leith and a few newer numbers.

Well-known supporters of Scottish independence, The Proclaimers kept the politics out of it and left their lyrics to put across their view, like in Scotland’s Story.

When the boys played the Assembly Hall three years ago, I mentioned in my review my disappointment that they did not sing The Light but this time it was on the playlist, nicely slotted in between some rockier numbers.

It all built to a great crescendo, with I’m On My Way appropriately the song that had everyone on their feet and many dancing their way to the front of the stage.

The festival atmosphere continued for the final three numbers of the main set, inevitably closing on I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).

Of course, it did not end there and foot stomping began immediately amid calls for an encore.

We were treated to four more songs before everyone left with a big smile on their faces.
