REVIEW: Suggs, My Life in Words and Music

Worthing’s Pavilion Theatre was packed out on Saturday night (May 18) to see Suggs, and the lead singer of Madness was given the warmest welcome anyone could hope for.

His show, My Life Story in Words and Music, did just that – told of the highs and lows, the fun and the fights, starting with his 50th birthday and the death of his beloved cat.

His hilarious, well-timed delivery made it feel like we were sitting round the bar of a London pub listening in to a regular’s ramblings.

Suggs is indeed a great raconteur, telling tales in a relaxed way, with just enough exaggeration to build the stories, mixed with enough truth to keep you interested.

It was funny as well as poignant, as we heard about his search for his father, life at his tough London school in the 1970s and his early days in the band The North London Invaders, which later became known as Madness.

The audience loved it, quickly rising from their seats en masse for a well-deserved standing ovation almost the second the first pair of hands touched to start the clapping.

Great entertainment and comforting proof that Worthing can fill its theatres sometimes.
