REVIEW: TIM RUMSEY - PIANO RECITAL, ST MARY'S CHURCH, LITTLEHAMPTON

What is less likely is to be able to perform an entire solo recital, from memory, featuring several really challenging works in front of a discerning audience to the most exacting standards.

The Arun Young Musician Competition, started by Littlehampton Rotary Club in 1981, has been Tim’s regular venue, gaining confidence and expertise over the years, culminating in his being crowned overall Young Musician of the Year in 2014

In recognition of Tim’s success, the AYM committee granted him the opportunity of presenting a programme of music of his own choice on a specially hired grand piano, with the services of a professional recording engineer in attendance. Tim also provided his appreciative audience with copious programme notes and introduced each piece clearly and not without humour.

The programme included wonderful works by Haydn, Schumann, Chopin and contemporary composer Stephen Goss, as well as an atmospheric composition of his own called Darkness into Light. What was even more extraordinary was his encore: an unpublished piece by George Gershwin which Tim himself transcribed by ear from a piano roll! All this while sitting AS levels, studying four A levels, and attending the junior department of the Royal Academy of Music for weekly lessons, with a view to attending a Conservatoire full-time. He also finds time to play clarinet and recorder as well as composing. Classic cars and meetings at Goodwood also feature highly on his agenda

Many thanks to Tim, his family and friends, to Father Roger for allowing us the use of his lovely church and facilities, and to everybody else who came to support our brilliant Young Musician

If Tim continues to succeed at this rate, he might just find himself the proud owner of a classic car one of these days!
