REVIEW: The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth

From Pharrell to Prince, from Joni Mitchell to Handel via The Who, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain were on fine form on yet another sparkling night.

For those of us who haven’t seen them for a few years, it was striking just how much they have moved on with their repertoire, so much so that you almost started to long for a few old faves… which duly arrived.

The encore which overlaid eight different tunes/songs was fantastic to hear again, a wonderful piece of musical agility from a group which seems to grow stronger with each passing decade. They are now embarking on their fourth.

So really, by now, you might possibly hope for just a hint of spontaneity in the banter which, as usual, seems just a touch too scripted.

But that’s the merest quibble on a night which left us all smiling broadly.
