Review: King Lear, Connaught Theatre, Worthing

GLOBE Theatre on Tour brought a production of exceptional quality to the Connaught Theatre last night, and Worthing audiences leapt at the chance to see it.

King Lear, possibly Shakespeare’s finest play, was performed in a booth stage, with the main theatre lights kept on, to give the audience the feel of the full Globe experience.

It was very effective, though with possibly the warmest evening of the year on Friday, some of us were dreaming of sitting watching the performance outside in the park!

The quality of the acting was clear from the start and the cast gave an energetic performance, complete with music of the period played live on stage.

What was most effective was the clever sound effects, all produced by hands rather than electronics, particularly as the storm raged around Lear.

The play is long and complicated, which is why most live production condense the written work, as the Globe did here. But the beauty of the language was retained, as the tragedy played out.

Don’t miss this chance to see the Globe Theatre in action. There is another performance tonight at 7.30pm.
