A patch of land could become the site of 200 homes in Hailsham.

A screening opinion has been submitted to Wealden District Council from Fernham Homes. This finds out if an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is needed to make a planning application.

If a future planning application is approved, up to 200 dwellings – 35 per cent affordable housing – could be built on a 16.5-hectare ‘irregular land parcel’ east of Battle Road. Plans say it is located alongside the north eastern edge of the existing built up area of Hailsham.

In 2014 there was an application for up to 135 dwellings to be built but this was withdrawn. Plans say: “While the decision will rest with Wealden District Council, this screening request concludes that the proposed development does not require EIA, as it is not considered likely to result in significant environmental effects.”

The next step is to decide if an EIA is needed. Planning reference: WD/2022/6508/SO
