Stores in the group chose their own charity partners and in total, 21 different local causes were supported through fundraising and raising awareness.

A total of £12,925 was raised in Sussex thanks to donations from customers and Southern Co-op rounded up the amount to £17,000, to show its appreciation for the local causes and ensure each received a minimum of £500.

Holly Bramble, community and campaign co-ordinator, said: “Across all of our stores in the south, colleagues and customers raised a massive £120,000 for local partners. This was no mean feat as a lot of the bigger fundraising events had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

“Despite the pressure a lot of families had to face last year, they have still found time to give generously and make a difference to local causes who have been keeping the communities going.”

In Yapton, the Main Road store’s partner was Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation and, together with six other stores, colleagues raised £2,889.

The store in Station Parade, East Preston, raised £682 for Littlehampton RNLI Lifeboat Station and the Ferring store was able to donate £500 to Ferring Country Centre after its fundraising total was rounded up.

Other causes supported in West Sussex included Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital and Love Your Hospital, with fundraising activities including colouring competitions, treasure hunts, raffles and guess the number of sweets in a jar.

Every year, each of the Southern Co-op stores choses a local partner to create greener, safer, healthier or more inclusive neighbourhoods. As a lot of fundraising was cancelled last year, the existing local partnerships will continue into 2021, as part of the Love Your Neighbourhood programme.

The programme also enables charities and local causes to apply for grants of up to £500 to help sow the seeds to a secure, stronger future for everyone. Applications are now open for 2021, visit www.thesouthernco-operative.co.uk/love-your-neighbourhood for more information.
