Guild Care is a Worthing-based charity that employs 300 frontline care staff between three nursing homes and a home care service. It is always looking for great people to join the team. Aside from the registered nurse roles, those applying do not require previous experience, just a desire to help and a caring nature.

Becky Sinclair is Guild Care’s recruitment manager. Before joining the charity, she worked in care for 13 years, eventually becoming a care home deputy manager.

Wanting to help people get into care work, Becky has given her thoughts on Guild Care and its recruitment process. Firstly, asked how she would describe the charity’s care workers in three words, she answered: “Amazing, dedicated… there’s about a million brilliant words I could use!”

Explaining how her previous care experience has helped her in recruiting, she said: “I have an understanding of what care roles involve. I know the day-to-day, so if we’re ever asked at interview what a typical day in a care home looks like, I have the experience to answer.

“Also, I know the realities of the role and what kind of people we need to recruit. We need people with the right values, empathy, understanding, patience and the natural caring attitude. That’s what we look for, someone who’s actually caring. We can teach the practical skills but we can’t teach somebody how to care.

“It’s important to give people looking to apply the understanding that there can be difficult times. It takes the right person to be a carer. But for the right person, it’s the most rewarding job you can ever do.”

Asked her favourite things about Guild Care, she answered: “That we’re a charity and we help the local community. The fact that we’re local and have been around for so long gives people trust in us.

“Also, because we’re not too big, we can give a personal approach to the people that we care for and employ. It’s nice to have that more personal, homely touch instead of being corporate.”

As well as roles requiring no experience, Guild Care is currently recruiting registered nurses. Fixed shifts are available and clinical skills are put to good use, for example taking bloods and changing catheters and dressings.

The role allows you to build a relationship with the residents, which is something the Guild Care nurses value.
