Worthing restaurant wins Covid Curry Heroes award

A Worthing restaurant has won an award in recognition of its efforts to feed key workers and vulnerable people in the community during the Covid crisis.

The Mahaan, in Montague Street, has been delivering free meals to NHS staff, care workers and others in the area who have needed support.

Curry Life, the leading national trade magazine, has awarded The Mahaan owner Askor Ali a Local Covid Curry Heroes 2020 plaque and praised his staff for ‘going the extra mile’ during the pandemic.

Syed Nahas Pasha, editor-in-chief, said: “With Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants and takeaways across the country providinig vital community support during the Covid crisis, in the face of major economic threats to their own businesses, Curry Life is recognising these vital contributions by presenting a limited number of special plaques.”

Many curry houses across the country had been ‘truly heroic’, he added, and their efforts really deserved to be recognised.

Mr Ali said: “Our NHS and social care sector have worked tirelessly this year to provide support to the many people who need it across the UK, often in exceptionally difficult circumstances, and they are still doing a great job for the community and I was just doing my bit.

“During the first lockdown, we have delivered 160 free meals to Worthing Hospital and also provided 10 free meals every night for vulnerable people in our locality.”
