Council backs fledgling firms to flourish at awards

A long-term backer of the awards, the councils will crown the winner in one of the most hotly-contested categories at Worthing Pavilion on November 14.

Regeneration cabinet members Pat Beresford and Bryan Turner, who will help judge the awards, said they were delighted to be involved in the process for another year.

Worthing councillor Mr Turner said: “We want to highlight what we have in Worthing.

“It was a fantastic success last year and it was a really great night.”

The council also sponsored the start-up category last year, won by Worthing-based quality ready meal producers Love Food, which wowed the judges with their strong turnover, growth and ethos.

Adur representative Mr Beresford said the area’s smaller businesses were just as important as the major players and the council was keen to highlight this in sponsoring the start-up category.

He said: “You have to plant your seed somewhere. Ricardo wasn’t born big – someone had a vision – and our job is to be available to listen to them and see where we can help.

“The energy and entrepreneurial skills of those who enter the awards never ceases to amaze me.”

The closing date for nominations - Monday, September 22 - is fast approaching.

Judging will take place on October 22, before the black tie awards ceremony, where the winners will be announced.

Mr Turner added: “We want to encourage people to get online and enter as we are approaching the cut-off date for entries.

“Large or small businesses can enter across a number of different categories.

“We consider every entry and you don’t have to be a mammoth company to get in there. You just need to show some enthusiasm for your business.”
