Alice Baddeley and David Batchelor are converting the former horse transporter into a traditional Finnish wood-fired sauna called Fire, Salt and Sea.

Since becoming friends through their shared love of all-year-round swimming, Alice and David decided to try and emulate the success of destinations such as Brighton’s Beach Box, which offers a short dash from steamy hot sauna to cool, refreshing ocean.

The pair are carrying out the renovations themselves, but have launched a crowdfunder to help fund the project.

Depending on the size of donation, supporters can access rewards at the sauna.

Although David and Alice live in Brighton and Shoreham respectively, they felt Worthing was the perfect location for the pop-up hot box.

Alice said: “We were particularly attracted to Worthing for its community spirit, rich ecological history and local grassroots projects connecting people to the coast.

“We are passionate about bringing the benefits of sauna and sauna culture to Worthing’s residents and visitors.”

She said they hoped Fire, Salt and Sea could contribute to the changing face of Worthing and bring health benefits that have won the support of Worthing Borough Council and the wider community.

Having been a part of Finnish culture for thousands of years, saunas are said to aid relaxation and sleep, reduce stress, improve exercise performance and even protect against cardiovascular and rheumatoid diseases.

Combining sauna with plunging into cold water amplifies these benefits and can leave you on an intense, natural high, Alice said.

With more than £2,600 raised of their £9,000 target, the pair are hoping to be up and running by October.

Sessions can be booked online, starting at £5 for 30 minutes, but covid-19 restrictions mean bookings can only be made within households until guidance changes.
