German students experience British culture on the south coast

28 A-level scholars have made their way from the Georg Büchner Schule, Darmstadt in Germany to spend two weeks working in a practical role.

Some are spending time in bars and shops, while others have more specific roles.

Luis Hamm, 16, is working at The Range.

He said: “It is hard work but you meet interesting people and people who have worked there for a long time. I am here because I want to improve my English and also because I like the English people.”

17 year old Viktoria Henn is having her first experience at a fish and chip shop.

“I think they’re very delicious,” she said. “I like it very much, I like the contact with the other guests. I do the serving and enjoy interactions and I like it because it is very interesting speaking to people.”

Tine Dahlem, 17, praised the town, saying: “I like the town because it is not that big and I really love the sea. Also, it is warmer than at home.”

Giulia Cipressi-Hoheisel, English and Politics teacher, said: “I know this part of the UK and I was looking for the town of the right size, not too small and not too big, and it is in sight of the sea.

“This is very important because we are in the heart of Germany so I wanted them to experience that very much, and every company we have found is located on or next to the seafront.

“I want everybody to be happy and I want them them to go back with an experience they will remember lifelong, because they have met another culture. We are very different countries and I want them to know that they will bring this experience back for the rest of their lives.”
