New minibus has immediate impact for Worthing pupils

The school for secondary and sixth form pupils with special educational needs benefited from the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The new 14-seater minibus, a vital lifeline enabling pupils to go out and experience their community, was presented by The Lord’s Taverners.

Head teacher Phillip Potter said: “The impact of having this bus is immediate. It means that we’ve got young people who can go out straight away.

“We’ve got over 250 students here and it’s really important for us that we are out and about in our local community as often as possible, so during school time, evenings, weekends and during the holidays we run a whole series of activities that enable our students to engage completely with the local community. This new minibus will make a huge difference to the pupils.”

The People’s Postcode Lottery raises money for charities and good causes across Great Britain and its support of the Lord’s Taverners, the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, has helped it to provide the new minibus for Oak Grove College.

The Lord’s Taverners will donate more than £3million this year to help give disadvantaged and disabled young people a ‘sporting chance’ in life.

Since 1976, the charity has placed more than 1,110 accessible minibuses across schools in the UK.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the first minibus donation and to celebrate this, the charity will be giving away a record 40 minibuses in 2016.

The iconic Lord’s Taverners minibuses provide disadvantaged and disabled young people with the chance to engage with their area by getting more access to the facilities on offer and build important life skills in the process.

Paul Robin, chief executive of the Lord’s Taverners, said: “The Lord’s Taverners believes that sport and recreation are essential for all young people, regardless of ability or background.

“This minibus will help the young people at Oak Grove College to get out and enjoy new places and experiences in their region and we are proud to support their work.”
