Pupils '˜a credit' to school as Ofsted rating improves

A Worthing headteacher has described her pupils as a credit to the school after a much-improved Ofsted inspection.

West Park CE Primary School, in Marlborough Road, underwent a two-day inspection in February having been told to improve in November 2013.

The findings of the inspection team, led by Julie Sackett, were published on March 2 and rated the school ‘good’ in all areas.

Describing the behaviour of the children during the inspection, headteacher Caitriona Bull said: “The children are wonderful and were a credit to our school, whether they read, spoke, shared their work or met the inspectors at any point in the two days.”

She herself came in for praise in Ms Sackett’s report, which stated Mrs Bull showed “exceptional leadership”, adding: “She has rejuvenated the quality of teaching and learning since the previous inspection, bringing the school community together to work confidently and effectively as a team.”

Teaching was found to have improved and was effective in all classes, while pupils were seen to make good progress, with their attainment higher at the end of Key Stages 1 and 2 than it was during Ofsted’s previous inspection.

There was praise for the behaviour of the children who were reported to work “extremely well” together, feeling safe and secure at the school.

When it came to further improvements, Ms Sackett said staff needed to: set work that challenged learning in English, particularly for the most able pupils; make sure pupils presented their work carefully and neatly; and help children to improve their handwriting.

Mrs Bull said she was delighted with the inspection report.

She added: “I am particularly pleased that every layer of our school team, the behaviour and attitudes of our pupils and the work of our governors were recognised as being key to our making significant improvements since our last inspection.

“The inspection team were very thorough and validated our own self-evaluation.

“We are content with our areas to improve to reach ‘outstanding’ and were already working on these.

“Our parents and staff are very pleased and looking forward to our further progress.

“The process has been very positive an enabled us to validate our progress, and plan our next adventure.”
