More than 500 pupils at Orchards Junior School were given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sit behind the wheel of the sports car and some described it as ‘the best day ever’.

The year-six pupils were also given an inspirational talk by the company’s STEM ambassadors, Harley Gasson and George Blacker.

Ian Chilvers, school business manager, said: “They discussed the wide range of possibilities open to young people for a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“The children were extremely enthused by the talk and asked some interesting and relevant questions.

“Another highlight of the visit was the arrival of a 200MPHMcLaren F570s roaring on to the playground. As the car, and noise level, was revved up, the queue to take part snaked across the playground.”

The school has recently been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark for its continued commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning.

The enthusiastic after-school STEM club hopes to make the visit from McLaren an annual event.
