As the Coronavirus pandemic continues to take hold, the fear, uncertainty and physical isolation can leave people feeling alone and adrift.

But it is in times of crisis that the community can come together to support eachother, and the people of Worthing are no different.

On Thursday afternoon (March 19), Worthing resident Caroline Ponto decided to set up a support group on Facebook, Worthing Coronavirus (Covid-19) Support Network, for residents to communicate around the growing crisis.

Initially set up for Caroline to galvanise support from her neighbours to help vulnerable and elderly locals, the group soon grew to take in all areas of the town.

"It occurred to me that we should have a dedicated group to support this activity, share resources and keep spirits lifted with tips on how to survive lockdown," she said.

"I set the group up on Thursday afternoon and pasted the link in a few places. By Sunday night there were over 1,000 members and we are now well over 5K. We now have a dedicated team of administrators moderating posts to direct people to the latest government guidelines and up-to-date information around self-isolation, financial assistance and local support services.

"The enthusiasm has been heart-warming, with the kind-natured people of Worthing seeking ways to assist those in need. There are posts set up by council ward to help direct people to groups in their local area or even road.

"My feeling is that efforts need to be coordinated on a micro level and that we should look to our friends and neighbours first. A website to enable people to connect with others more effectively will be up and running in a few days."

Caroline said one function of the group was to maintain a responsible stance, to reduce panic buying and stockpiling by banning posts about empty shelves, which shops have specific items in stock and lack of home delivery slots. It was creating a 'vicious circle' of stock depletion, rather than encouraging consideration for others, she added.

"There has been a phenomenal response to this group already, but I think it's safe to say the toughest times are still ahead of us," she said.

"If we can lay down the foundations of support now, we'll be able to make a real difference when we are needed the most.

"Please be aware that while the majority of people have good intentions, there will be some who use this difficult time to take advantage of the generosity or vulnerablity of others. Be cautious, stay safe and keep well. We will get through this.
