Public Health England statistics show the pandemic is still on the rise in the county, with cases more than doubling in some areas.

But the increases, although still significant, are widely less severe than a couple of weeks ago when the new, more contagious variant of the virus first started ripping across the South East.

Sussex has been under strict social restrictions since Boxing Day, starting out in Tier 4 before joining the rest of the UK in lockdown on Tuesday (January 5).

Hastings and Rother entered Tier 4 earlier than the rest of the county and their comparatively smaller infection increases, in stark contrast to the meteoric surges seen in December, show the impact of tougher restrictions.

These latest figures from Public Health England cover the period of December 29 to January 4 and include the infection rates, which are the number of confirmed cases per 100,000 people.

For context, the average infection rate in England is 576 positive cases per 100,000 people.
