Everyone at St Giles’ Church, in Upper Shoreham Road, had wanted to make this year’s event special, to mark the first Year of the Nurse and the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

Unfortunately, the coronavirus guidelines made that impossible but the Rev James Grant found a way to publicly mark the occasion.

Penny Joseph, church warden, said: “Our church, St Giles, was built in 1905 as the workhouse chapel to the old workhouse, which is now Southlands Hospital in Shoreham, and subsequently became the hospital chapel and now a CofE church in the parish of Kingston Buci.

“Every year in May, we have a special event to celebrate International Nurses Day and hoped to make it really special this year.

“Our vicar did stand outside the curch on Tuesday, May 12, by our poster and gave an address thanking all nurses, ending with a short payer.”
