Smokers urged to keep out of playgrounds in Worthing and Adur

Figures show 17 per cent of adults in Adur and 25 per cent of adults in Worthing regularly smoke, but two out of three smokers are thought to want to quit.

On No Smoking Day, March 14, and during the week, Adur and Worthing councils’ well-being hub advisers will be out in the community providing information for people wanting to go smoke-free.

The councils will also install 90 smoke-free signs in children’s play parks.

The signs have been designed by Rebecca Hain, aged nine, from Eastbrook Primary School, in Southwick, who beat more than 250 entrants in a competition run by the councils’ communities team.

Runners-up were Broadwater First and Middle School pupil Bethan Griffiths, 11, Orchards Middle School pupil Tamsin Hodges, 11 and Durrington High School pupil Paris Nethercott-Cable, 12.

Councillor Tom Wye, Worthing cabinet member for health and well-being, presented prizes of an art box, craft kit and book token to the students at a special presentation.

No Smoking advice sessions are taking place at Worthing MIND, The Hollies, Little High Street, on Monday (March 12), from 10.30am to noon, and at the Footprints Children and Families Centre, Lyndhurst Methodist Church, Lyndhurst Road, on Monday (March 12) from 12.30pm to 4pm, and again on March 14, from 1pm to 3pm.
