Aldi is giving 35,000 staff a 10% Christmas bonus to say thank you for working through lockdown

Aldi is giving 35,000 staff members a 10 per cent Christmas bonus next month as a gesture of thanks to staff for their hard work over lockdown.

The festive bonus will be given to employees who have continued to work under tough restrictions in England, which is currently facing its second national lockdown.

The supermarket said all of its store and distribution workers will receive a bonus in December, ahead of Christmas Day.

Around 35,000 staff will qualify for the pay boost, which comes amid calls for Sunday trading hours to be extended over the festive period.

Giles Hurley, Aldi chief executive, said, "This year has been a difficult one for so many and our colleagues have worked tirelessly to ensure the nation continues to have access to high quality affordable food.

"This bonus is a gesture of our appreciation for our amazing Aldi colleagues who have shown incredible resilience and dedication throughout 2020."

Aldi has also announced it is rolling out its new click and collect service at 200 more stores next month, following a successful trial in the Midlands in September.

The service will see collection points pop up in store car parks, with customers able to get their shopping bought to their car by staff in line with social distancing guidelines.

Shoppers can find their nearest participating Aldi online to book a time slot for collection in selected stores.

The supermarket is also trialling a rapid delivery service across several stores in the East Midlands, London, Cambridge and Greater Manchester, in partnership with Deliveroo.

This service allows shoppers to order from a range of 300 Aldi products and have them delivered to their doorstep within 30 minutes.
