Hard work and dedication pays off for foreign student

A WORTHING resident has won an Adult Learners’ Week award in recognition of her hard work in learning English.

Lithuanian Daina Joksiene, 45, arrived in the UK with little English skills, but saw improvements after enrolling on the English for Speakers of Other Languages course (ESOL) at Northbrook College, in Worthing, in 2008.

As her confidence grew, Daina took an employability qualification, gaining work as a cleaner and school lunchtime assistant.

She is now studying on a level-two ESOL course and volunteering as an art and ceramics teacher.

Chris Dale from the college, nominated Daina in the Building Life Skills through ESOL category in recognition of her progress.

“I would like to thank all my tutors for their help,” Daina said.

“After finishing every course I felt more and more confident.”

Janet Golding, UK ESOL development manager, said the international exam board, Trinity College London, was “delighted” to sponsor the award.

“Through hard work and dedication Daina has successfully gained employment and is able to communicate in English with confidence,” she said.
