Irene House was opened by Guild Care in 1976 following the generosity of benefactor Mr T.S. Gowland, whose only stipulation was that the home be named after his late wife.

However, with the needs of residents at Irene House changing, it became difficult for Guild Care to provide the quality of care that is expected and therefore it was no longer fit for purpose, so the home was closed in May 2017.

Residents and staff from Irene House have since been relocated to other Guild Care homes in Worthing.

The Parkfield Road property has now been sold to developer Rocco Homes.
