An anonymous donor has given a 1910 gramophone to be auctioned to raise money towards a life-changing operation for six-year-old Shoreham Beach girl Darcey Stride.

Grandparents Pauline and Freddie Stride, of Regis Court, West Parade, Worthing, said: “Every little helps. It all adds up and it also helps raise awareness of our fundraising.

“We were given the gramophone to sell to raise money for Darcey. We were given a box with all the bits and needles and everything.”

Campbells Auctions, in High Street, Worthing, has agreed to auction it on October 13 and waive the fees, so all the money can go to Darcey.

Auctioneer Paul Campbell said: “It is an Academy gramophone with a winding crank. You have to wind it before it plays, which is enough for one record.

“It is certainly pre World War One, just. It is the equivalent of the very latest music centre in 1910. Not everyone would be able to afford one.

“It needs a bit of help. The casing is old English oak and needs to be stripped but that is certainly possible.

“They can make £100 in good condition but £50 is a good guess for one in this condition.”

Mrs Stride said the SDR operation will be life-changing for Darcey, who has a form of cerebral palsy.

“She is such a lovely girl, she is always smiling. She has speech therapy because you cannot understand everything she says and they do expect the operation to improve that.

“It helps children in so many ways, not just walking. It just turns their lives around completely.”
