A27 bypass:£1billion cost sparks new schemes

AN estimated price-tag of about £1billion rules out a new Worthing-Lancing A27 bypass for the 'forseeable future', a county council select committee has been told.

Insteads, the county is now considering a package of possible options costing between 150m and 200m to implement, in a bid to ease worsening traffic conditions plaguing the area.

Cllr Peter Evans, chairman of a special task force set up to examine the A27 issue , said there was only one way to fully releieve Worthing and Lancing of major traffic congestion that commuters, residents and businesses endured on a daily basis and this was to build a bypass to the north of Worthing.

"The South East of England is the economic powerhouse of the UK and yet our heavy traffic still has to negotiate a single lane road running through residential areas of one of the largest towns in West Sussex," he said.
