Consultants working for the Government found a case for online improvements at Worthing and Lancing and for a bypass at Arundel.

Improvements will be subject to consultation with the public and relevant authorities.

West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “We have only just received these findings and there is a lot of detail to consider, particularly around sustainable transport and road safety.

“We are committed to involving residents, businesses, district and borough councils and the local enterprise partnership.

“The study does state that further work is required on the detail of the most feasible options.

“Once this has been completed, those options will be published for formal consultation.”

The study, carried out in three stages, identified solutions to the traffic problems at Arundel and Worthing based on whether they were achievable, affordable and offered value for money.

However, it has been criticised by the Arundel South Coast Alliance for Transport and the Environment group, which is concerned about the impact a bypass through Arundel could have on the surrounding area.

SCATE supporter and Arundel resident Simon Gray said: “There is no economic justification for spending the bulk of allocated funds on a controversially damaging road scheme at Arundel, when a far cheaper and less intrusive scheme could relieve choke points here.”
