The first phase will involve the closure of the eastbound carriageway for 12 nights starting on Monday. Work will then switch to the westbound carriageway for a further 12 nights, starting on March 16, and expected to finish by April 1.

There will be access for emergency vehicles at all times. Residents living along the A27 directly affected by the work will be given a permit to gain access to their premises via the A27, even when it is closed.

There will be a diversion via the A24, A259 and A2025 through Worthing.

A spokesman for Highways England said the work was necessary ‘because the existing road surface has reached the end of its operational life’.
