Twenty-one-year-old Jake, a former pupil of the Sir Robert Woodard Academy, in Upper Boundstone Lane, Lancing, was diving with a group of friends off the islands of Pulau Perhentian when he died.

The history student was studying at Nottingham Univerity’s campus in Ningbo, China.

A statement issued by the Sir Robert Wooded Academy reads: “It is with great sadness that the academy learnt of the death of one of its ex-students, Jake Andrews.

“Jake achieved great academic success gaining 13 GCSEs with nine subjects at A/A* standard and four good A-levels, including an A in History. Jake then went on to win a place at Nottingham University.

“However it is not only Jake’s intelligence, but his confidence, gregarious nature and sense of humour that we will remember. These qualities enabled him to have positive relationships with his peers, younger members of the academy and his teachers alike. He was particularly supportive of younger students, building close relationships with those who found school more difficult.

“Jake demonstrated the qualities that we aspire to develop in all our students, a young person with ambition involving himself in all aspects of academy life. He undertook the role of chapter prefect, participated in the debating team, the model United Nations, and was a keen sportsman. Jake said his most treasured memory of the academy was the Berlin Trip in 2010.”

The academy’s book of condolence will be open until Friday (June 26). The academy will also be fundraising for outdoor basketball hoops in Jake’s memory.

If former students and teachers wish to write in the book of condolence, the academy’s reception is open from 9.30am-4.00pm Monday to Thursday and until 3.30pm on Friday.
