Adur and Worthing leaders back devolution plans

The county council is set to argue that devolving powers from Whitehall to county council level will enable a more co-ordinated approach to delivering better services for residents, improving the economy, and attracting more investment.

Speaking to the Herald this morning, Worthing leader Dan Humphreys and Adur counterpart Neil Parkin welcomed the plans.

Mr Humphreys said: “I think more devolution and more power locally is a fantastic idea and we are absolutely up for taking part.”

Mr Humphrey added the plans would lead to greater accountability and allow local people to do what was best for their areas, as opposed to decisions being taken in Whitehall.

Proposed changes could see local authorities have more fiscal autonomy, and additional responsibilities relating to road and rail infrastructure, health and social care, and employment.

WSCC has already commissioned research into the benefits that would follow for communities in the South East if county councils were given greater autonomy by the Government.

Mr Parkin said: “I knew this was in the offing. It’s similar to what Adur and Worthing are already doing in Brighton with the City Deal. I don’t mind doing it with West Sussex as well as I am happy to get money from two different directions.”
