Adur Council’s parking income skyrockets

ADUR Council’s income from car parks has leapt by 1,317 per cent in the last five years.

Figures obtained from a Freedom of Information request by Adur Liberal Democrats show that income from pay and display and permits rose from £21,385 in 2008-09 to £303,056 in 2012-13.

The figures show that pay and display income rose from £14,260 in 2008-09 to £285,218 in 2012-13, while income from permits rose from £7,125 to £17,838 in the same period.

The figures also reveal that the council issued 4,966 parking tickets in 2012-13.

Of the 1,008 motorists who complained through the ‘informal challenge’ procedure, 605 were let off.

The proportion of cancelled tickets has risen from 45 per cent in 2009-10 to 60 per cent in 2012-13.

Lib Dem candidate Jemima Bland has accused the council of ‘milking motorists’ and has again called for two hours’ free parking to be reinstated in Adur.
