Adur Festival: A celebration of '˜Place' and all things Adur

A small Community Interest Company (CIC) based in Worthing, led by professional artists Nadia Chalk and Vanessa Breen, Creative Waves has been working along the Sussex coastal strip for more than five years. This small organisation packs a real punch, injecting art into the community via various projects and initiatives.

The festival saw an opportunity to engage schools via workshops with Creative Waves. In particular, the successful project Post to the Coast was the perfect opportunity to celebrate this year’s festival theme of Place.

Using old postcards and images from local archives, children have been learning about the rich seaside heritage along the Sussex coast through creative workshops, researching images and messages on old postcards.

These then inspired the students to design new images and focus on changes in landscape and architecture.

The original Post to the Coast project takes in locations between Worthing Pier and Shoreham Fort. For the festival, it was extended to other scenes in Adur.

Working within 12 schools, 300 students aged six to 15 have helped to design eight postcards depicting Lancing, Sompting, Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate.

People can pick up these around town in cafés and venues. Do send them on friends and family to tell about all the great events happening in the area next month – they are the perfect festival invite!

Some of the original artwork is on display in a toy theatre in Shoreham Library from now until then end of June, created for the festival by local artist Claire Lemmon.

Funding for these art workshops came via the Adur Pot of Gold from Adur District Council and was linked to the Heritage Lottery funded Post to the Coast project.
