Agency to consider A27 lights-off trial

East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton met a representative from the agency on Friday to discuss the issue, raised by a commuter’s petition following a technical fault.

The lights remained off at the busy A27 roundabout for several days last month, leading to improved traffic flow.

Mr Loughton said the agency were now looking into collecting more data.

He said: “I am pleased to report that the Highways Agency is taking the situation seriously and has obviously been influenced by the strength of feeling from motorists over recent weeks.

“It is now considering seriously how they can collect proper data about the impact of the lights on traffic and whether they can run a peak time only trial.”

The potential trial would not be run immediately, with safety factors needing to be considered.

The roundabout lies close to Worthing College, with students using a pedestrian crossing throughout the day.

The lights malfunction also occurred during half term, so data would need to be collected during busier periods.
