Air Cadets overwhelmed by support following break-in

The 45F Worthing Squadron Air Training Corps, a non-profit charity, lost expensive aviation equipment, which had been purchased with funds raised by the cadets, as well as a symbolic banner, during a break-in at Victoria Road in March.

Pilot Officer Simon Bacon said: “The support we have had from the community and businesses has been quite overwhelming.

“It’s great that people have come forward without any prompting and just offered their help and assistance.

“There are a lot of people who have been through the various units and appreciate what it does for supporting youth – helping kids to develop, giving them opportunities for leadership and adventure training, gaining skills and confidence.

“Its really rewarding to see the cadets grow and to see the difference that it makes to their lives.”

The community sprang into action after the burglary, with EFL Alarm Systems offering help with security issues and Morrisons donating tea, coffee and biscuits to help lift morale during the clean up of the damage.

Supermarkets ASDA and Waitrose set up a green token scheme for the group, while Tesco at Shoreham allowed the cadets to fundraise by bag packing at Easter. Staff at the Durrington branch rewarded the cadets with Easter eggs.

South East Vehicle Valeting Company helped restore the squadron minibus while Brandon Tool Hire offered equipment which allowed the cadets to bring a mobile climbing tower to the town to help raise funds.

A cake sale hosted by Davisons School for Girls, featuring cakes made by cadets, and people from Ferring Village Market raised £180. Ferring Downs WI donated £200 from a cream tea party, which went towards replacing the stolen radio equipment.

Runner Nuala Smyth has completed ten marathons with the Arunners running club, raising a total of £600.

Worthing Lions are funding the replacement of the squadron banner, which Officer Bacon called ‘the heart of any unit’. He hopes to have it replaced in time for Remembrance Sunday.
