All you need to know about Armistice centenary commemorations in Worthing

A spectacular display of more than 4,000 poppies hand-knitted by Worthing residents is just one of a series of special events and activities that will mark 100 years since the end of the First World War in Worthing.

The cascading poppy display will be exhibited in front of Worthing town hall next month in remembrance of the lives lost during the war.

Residents old and young from across Worthing have been hard at work knitting ahead of the display, which has been organised by the local community, charity and church group, Storm Ministries.

A number of specific events to commemorate the Centenary of the First World War will be held in the coming weeks.

Poignant reminders of WW1 will be found throughout Worthing.

On Monday, November 5, a total of 666 crosses will be in place ready for the opening of the Garden of Remembrance at Worthing Town Hall.

More than 600 local men, who lived across 119 streets in the town, lost their lives.

To commemorate them, 666 individually-named poppy crosses and biographies will be displayed on the houses where the fallen had lived as residents before enlisting.

Portraits of those who died are also being displayed on phone boxes.

On Friday, November 9, a short memorial will take place and artwork will be unveiled at Worthing Station involving pupils from St Andrew’s School.

Worthing Theatres will be hosting a programme of WW1 films at the Connaught Theatre.

Worthing Museum and Art Gallery will also host special displays.

On Remembrance Sunday on November 11, services and parades will be held at the war memorials in Worthing as well as in Lancing, Sompting, Southwick and Shoreham.

Civic Heads and Councillors from Adur and Worthing Councils will be present to lay wreaths.

The Worthing parade will be followed by Battles Over – A Nation’s Tribute.

Taking place on Worthing seafront from 6.45pm, this event will be part of a chain of 1,000 First World War Beacons of Light which will be lit throughout the UK.

Councillor Tom Wye, Worthing Borough Councillor and Armed Forces Champion, said: “These events will help us to remember the tragic loss of life during following two World Wars and other conflicts on the Centenary of the First World War.

“Worthing has and always will remember with pride the great sacrifices made during all conflicts by our residents, and we will cherish their memory.”

From Saturday, October 27, poppy sellers will be out in the town centre selling remembrance poppies and pins.
