Amnesty's diamond concern

SUPPORTERS of Amnesty International made their views known on the subject of the diamond trade.

More than 100 people, including Amnesty member MP Norman Baker, turned out for two showings of the film Blood Diamond at Lewes Cinema Club at the weekend.

Amnesty members handed out information.

Jean Wholey, a member of the Lewes branch of Amnesty International, said: 'This film is a reminder of the havoc which diamonds have caused to African countries. During the 1990s, diamond fuelled wars killed millions of people, displaced millions more and wrecked countries including Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone.

'This is all the more upsetting when we think about why people here in Britain buy diamonds they are often a token of love and commitment.'

Amnesty International and Global Witness have launched a joint campaign about the diamond trade and are lobbying goverments and the industry to do more to clean up the trade.
