FAMILIES who rent chalets at East Beach Worthing may soon be “turfed out” to make way for artist studios and commercial shops.
A planning application has been submitted by Stefan Sykes, who owns Coast Cafe, to convert the 10 chalets, which are rented for £1,130 each per year.
Worthing Borough Council claims that the £75,000 project is necessary to “complete the transformation of the seafront into an exciting and distinctive destination, for both residents and visitors, with a range of facilities and attractions for all ages, whilst retaining Worthing’s traditional character.”
But the renters say that the existing studios do not generate high footfall numbers, and have already collected 500 names on a petition in opposition to the application.
