Anti-vandal doors for Worthing Arcade

ANTI-VANDAL doors are proposed for the entrances to Worthing's Royal Arcade, between South Street and Marine Parade.

The owners, Worthing Arcade Ltd, have submitted a planning application to Worthing Council.

If it is approved, the glass doors would be installed as soon as possible, and would be locked between 10pm and 7am, seven days a week.

Richard John, chairman and director of Worthing Arcade, said: "At present, it is bad at nights with youngsters going through the arcade.

"They cause much graffiti and leave a lot of mess, and have done for many years.

"Also, the doors will allow us to put things in the arcade, such as plant tubs and other attractive features, which we can't do at the moment for fear of them being vandalised."

Mr John said an additional benefit would be that the Royal Arcade would not be so much of a "wind tunnel" as it was at present.

Worthing Arcade made a similar planning application to the council's development control committee about a year ago, but this was rejected on design grounds.

Mr John said the arcade was not a public right-of-way.
