Archaeologists remembered with pier windows

Worthing Archaeological Society held a small ceremony last Sunday to mark the new windows commemorating late members John Pull, who died in 1960, and Con Ainsworth, who died in 2001.

Liz Lane said: “Both were eminent archaeologists in the local area and both were members of the society in their day.

“John Pull was a very able archaeologist but also a geologist and a talented Illustrator. There is a display about him in Worthing Museum.

“We have incorporated some of his drawings into the window, including his drawing of a handaxe within the Shepherds’ Crown (echinoid).

“Con Ainsworth’s knowledge of Sussex archaeology was extensive and he inspired many folk to get involved and to study further.

“We included the flint mines of Cissbury in his window, as this is such a significant area for the local archaeology and for Worthing.

“The recently-published Sussex Archaeological Collections 2017 contains articles referring to both gentlemen, so their work in archaeology continues to inspire and stimulate.”

John’s granddaughter, Amanda O’Carroll, and other family and friends, were at the ceremony, along with Sue Lyon, Con’s daughter, and her husband.

About 30 people gathered to mark the occasion and Siobhan Jones, who designed and created the windows at The Forge in Worthing, was warmly thanked for her time and skill.
