Art society exhibits in Arundel for first time

MORE than 90 artworks by members of West Sussex Art Society went on display at Arundel Museum.

The exhibition, entitled Small is Beautiful, ran from Friday to Tuesay. The small-scale pieces of art showcased the creative talents of members, who are both professional and amateur artists.

Among the guests was Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert, who visited on Friday evening.

He was welcomed by chairman Andrew Griffiths and invited him to join in with the secret ballot for the best picture on display.

Mr Griffiths said: “This is the society’s first venture in Arundel. We are very impressed with the venue and the museum has given us and our visitors a very warm welcome.

“I am also very impressed with the work of our artists and delighted with the how the exhibition looks.”

The society’s Rose Bowl was presented to artist and organiser Maggie Tredwell and three Highly Commended wwards were given to Arthur Ridley, Steve Carroll and Angela Bell.

Mr Herbert said: “I enjoyed visiting the exhibition and seeing the talents of our West Sussex artists.

“There were some nice pictures and it was great that the Arundel Museum hosted the exhibition and enabled free entrance to it.”

Artist and sculptor Philip Jackson is president society. He created the 9ft statue of Mahatma Gandhi that now stands in Parliament Square opposite the Palace of Westminster.

The society, founded in 1929, was originally known as the Sketch Club. It has evolved over the years and now has about 60 members, who meet on the second Saturday of the month, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, at Heene Community Centre, Heene Road, Worthing.
