Schoolchildren pulled on their running shoes and raised more than £2,600 for victims of the Nepal earthquakes.

Youngsters at Walberton and Binsted CE Primary School, in Arundel, were moved to action after Hugo van Driel, of the Yapton Free Church, spoke to them in assembly about the plight of the people of the country which was hit by two quakes in the space of a month, with the loss of thousands of lives.

Hugo, who had spent years raising money for projects in Nepal, was a familiar face at Walberton and Binsted, having visited the school before in the company of Pastor Bharat, from Nepal, to speak about the direct benefits of some of the money raised.

In the assembly after the first earthquake, Hugo spoke movingly about the plight of all the people in Nepal, but particularly those he knew personally, who had been affected.

After hearing Hugo speak, children from Year 6, along with their class teacher Ms Charlotte Emery, organised a Charity Charge to raise more money.

They wrote publicity material and an article for the school website, spoke about it in family assembly and then organised a fun run around the field.

The school community rose to the cause and a total of £2603.30 was presented to Hugo at the assembly on Friday (May 22).

Headteacher Laura Brockhurst said: “It was wonderful to see our Year 6 children using their own initiative and organisational skills to help raise money for such a worthwhile cause.”

Hugo added: “This is an amazing amount of money raised. Thank you to the whole school community. This money will go directly to help the people of Nepal in their rebuilding efforts.”
