Astronomer talk on Violent Universe

St. Richard's Catholic College pupils were entertained by a talk on the Violent Universe by the University of Sussex's visiting astronomer, Dr. Darren Baskill.

Pupils, from all year groups, gathered to listen to Dr. Baskill share details of his recent visit to Hawaii to undertake some Extreme Astronomy.

He told the pupils about the challenging conditions of extreme altitudes that he faced during his research trip in the observatory situated on one of the highest volcanoes in Hawaii. Nevertheless, his observations allowed him to look more closely at cosmic phenomena such as black holes and stars.

The St. Richard's pupils were impressed by Dr. Baskill's engaging speaking style which appealed to the keen astronomers in the audience as well as engaging the complete amateur.

At the end of the presentation, Dr. Baskill answered as many questions as time allowed for. Following the talk, year 8 pupils Tim Conneally and Robert Schuler wrote a report and described how they "didn't know that there was a black hole at the centre of our galaxy and we learnt lots of really interesting facts."

Year 11 pupil Will Bartlett was equally appreciative of Dr. Baskill's talk: "Overall, I found the evening an interesting and fascinating one and learnt a lot from it."
