The property in Old Fort Road, designed by ABIR architects who specialise in coastal projects and have offices in Hove, was described by Judge Darren Bray as a ‘perfect choice’ and a ‘joy to visit as a judge’.

The house featured in Charlie Luxton’s Homes By The Sea broadcast on Channel 4 on Tuesday, October 4.

Giles Ings of ABIR architects said of the house: “It’s a unique home designed specifically for this family and for this location — the pebbles for the gabions, for instance, were chosen to match the beach.

“It couldn’t belong anywhere else.”

The home has direct access to the beach, where owners Catherine, Adas and their two children indulge their passion for wind surfing and swimming.

The building’s exterior is wrapped in pebbles, reflecting the beach around it. Built to replace an outdated 1950’s bungalow, the home is arranged with the living spaces on the upper levels and bedrooms at ground floor level.

A protected south-east facing terrace and the large windows on the first floor offer views across the channel. The garden area has a timber deck and raised path above a pebbled landscape with plants and grasses.
