Battle of Britain remembrance service

MEMBERS of the armed forces were remembered at a special Battle of Britain memorial service on Sunday.

More than 60 people, including 15 members of the Royal Air Forces Association, Hailsham branch, gathered at St Mary's Church in the town centre. The Rev David Bourne lead the service.

RAFA president Rex Taylor, 84, was an RAF navigator. He said: 'The service was aimed at remembrance and prayer for existing personnel serving overseas.

'I would like to have seen more public interest but it went well.

'The Battle of Britain is a date that should be remembered.

'If the RAF did not play their part like they did we would not be around now.'

The Mayor, Cllr Nick Ellwood, and two police community support officers joined in the service.

Standards were carried by youngsters from 249 Hailsham, the Millennium Squadron (ATC), and cubs and brownies. Girl guides were also present.

After the service the mayor led a laying-of-wreaths ceremony at Hailsham war memorial and the Last Post was sounded.
