So far, around 900 people have registered to be part of a mass gathering of ‘elves’ in Steyne Gardens, Worthing, on Saturday, December 7, although event organiser Robert Luff, of Robert Luff & Co, is hoping to reach 1500.

He said: “We thought it would be a really good idea with Christmas being the season of good will. It’s a charity event and Christmas ties in quite nicely.

“We are well on target and we have every confidence that we will make it.”

Those wanting to take part need to make sure they have registered online and are wearing either a red or green top on the day.

Robert Luff & Co will provide participants with a Christmas hat complete with elf ears to complete the look.

‘Elves’ need to stand together as a group for five minutes for the record attempt to be valid.

The current record of 762 was set last year in Carmarthenshire in Wales.

Robert said: “We need as many people there as possible. It’s really good for the town, there will be national coverage and we want to put Worthing on the map so people know it’s a good place to live.”

It is hoped the gathering of elves will raise thousands of pounds for St Barnabas House hospice and Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice.

It is free to participate but there will be the opportunity to donate to the charities. There will also be music and stalls for people to look at before the attempt officially begins.

“If we break the record it will be a huge relief. There’s been a lot of time and effort put into it. The more people there means the more money we will get for the charities. It’s a feel good factor for Worthing,” said Robert.

He added that the weather forecast for the day looked like it would be dry and relatively warm for the time of year.

If the record-breaking attempt is successful, participants will receive with a certificate from the Guinness World Records.
