Bexhill's speed-demon meets a modern record breaker

MOTORISTS who visited the Beaulieu Steam Fair took this shot of Bexhill's replica Serpollet alongside another record-breaker.

Three members of the Bexhill 100 Motoring Club borrowed the Serpollet - a replica of the steam-powered car driven to victory by Leon Serpollet in the first British motor trials along Bexhill seafront - from Bexhill museum for the trip.

The snap shows our replica beside the car which set a new steam-powered land speed record of 140mph in America recently.

The 7.6 metre long, three tonne Inspiration was driven by an American, Charles Burnett III in California last year.

Leon Serpollet took the record in 1902 with a 75mph run in Nice.

Brian Storkey, president of the Bexhill 100 Motoring Club, said the new record, at not quite double that set by the Serpollet, showed how advanced the car was for its time.
